It is said that if an organization hopes for a great future and continued success, its foundation must be built with the bricks of passionate and adept HR leaders. Such captains of the organizational ship are the reasons behind the highly productive and inspiring workforce. Right from enthusiastic approaches and empathetic behaviour towards employees to conviction and disruption-proof leadership are the characteristics of these human resources managers.

Shyam Gor, the Global Manager, Resource, and Talent Management at CIGNEX & Relevance Lab, tops the list of such ardent HR leaders due to his passionate behaviour towards work and immense interest in helping people around. A considerable leader like Shyam believes in the power of ‘WHY’ behind the HR work and strives to make meaningful connections with candidates and his organization. Working as a responsible growth engine of CIGNX, Shyam creates and promotes an environment where innovation, collaboration and mutual respect are honoured.

The VEDIC Magic

Shyam’s journey in Talent Acquisition and Resource Management has been an exciting ride. He enthusiastically adds that his career path was driven by curiosity and a deep desire to make an impact in the industry. From the early days, when Shyam was first introduced to the world of HR, he was intrigued by the immense potential of people and how the right talent could elevate organizations to new heights. This fascination led him to step into this dynamic ecosystem, where his passion for sourcing, training, and resource management grew exponentially.

In my career, I have been fortunate to witness the transformation of HR as a key driver of business success. The journey was, and still is, about embracing change, evolving with technology, and understanding how we can create meaningful connections within the talent pool,” adds Shyam. Further, he underlines the importance of five primary principles in business. Over a period of time, he also developed these principles, and a leadership philosophy centred around VEDIC principles—Vision, Empathy, Delegation, Innovation, and Collaboration—which serve as a foundation for how he leads and how the company manages its talent acquisition and resource management strategies.

Leading the People’s Revolution

As the famous motivational speaker Simon Sinek once said, “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.” This quote encapsulates the essence of Shyam’s transition from merely performing a function to deeply engaging with the ‘why’ behind his work. What helped him grow is his deep devotion towards encouraging meaningful connections, both with candidates and his organization.

Shyam’s promising journey also showcases his impassioned behaviour towards work. His voyage into the world of Talent Acquisition and Talent Management was not a linear path but one filled with curiosity, passion, and a deep sense of purpose. Talking about how his interest in people sparked his way to his illuminating career, Shyam mentions, “Early in my career, I was fascinated by the intricacies of human behaviour and the power of a strong team. I always believed that a company’s success begins with the people behind it. It was this belief that pushed me to explore the dynamic field of HR.

Very eager to learn in the beginning, Shyam started picking up every bit of knowledge that could help him understand the human element of organizations. He mastered skills and the drive to create effective teams, optimize recruitment processes, and ensure that talent was being harnessed to its full potential and became his North Star. Further, his career evolved and his motivations evolved beyond just placing candidates in roles. At this point in his career, Shyam found purpose in shaping organizational cultures and building environments where people could thrive.

The HR’s Guiding Hand: A Novel Approach to Leadership and Team Building

By building a great career with a passionate mindset and a people-centric approach, Shyam also built his unique leadership style that helped his organization grow. “My leadership style is often seen as the driving force behind the achievements at CIGNEX. My approach has always focused on creating an environment that encourages innovation, collaboration, and mutual respect,” explains Shyam. Behind such a noble approach lies the inspiration from Shyam’s leader, Dr. Ankita Singh. She always believed that leadership is about inspiring those around you to reach their highest potential and to build trust through empathy and clear communication.

Shyam’s leadership process includes a pivotal part of this philosophy—empowering the team, particularly in Talent Acquisition, by involving them in decision-making processes. The company has custom-built its ATS tool after in-depth discussions with its recruiters. These brainstorming sessions were instrumental in ensuring that the tools the team created truly reflected the needs and challenges faced by its talent acquisition team. As a result, ATS has helped CIGNEX streamline the hiring process, making it more efficient and tailored to its needs. Moreover, this has allowed the company and its team members to successfully navigate the recruitment process, resulting in better candidate matches and quicker placements.

Boosting Employee Morale

Greater employee morale is always built by appreciating them and creating an appropriate appraisal system. For that, CIGNEX has embraced automation tools for the entire appraisal cycle—from calculations to generating appraisal letters. This has not only reduced the administrative burden but also helped maintain consistency and accuracy in its performance review process.

Moreover, the development of interactive dashboards for HR, Resource Management, and Talent Acquisition. These dashboards provide valuable insights for the company’s executive team, enabling them to make informed decisions. Real-time analytics help the team to track progress, measure key metrics, and identify areas that need improvement. This ensures that the strategies implemented by the company are always aligned with the business objectives.

Commitment to Excellence and Innovation

A standout project that showcases CIGNEX’s and Shyam’s leadership commitment to excellence and innovation was the revamping of Talent Acquisition strategies. At the heart of this initiative was a focus on blending traditional recruitment methods with cutting-edge technology. The team customized its ATS tool, which allowed them to screen resumes more efficiently and identify candidates who not only matched the skills required but also aligned with company culture.

What made this project particularly transformative was the integration of automation and human judgment. While ATS assisted in filtering through large volumes of resumes, it was the human touch that decided the best candidates for each role. This balance ensured that the team maintained the efficiency of automation while preserving the emotional intelligence that recruitment requires. The success of this initiative reinforced the company’s belief that technology should always complement, not replace, human decision-making.

As we continue to adapt to changing times, our focus on SUSTAIN (Stability, Uniqueness, Sustainability, Agility, and Nurturing) is guiding us towards a future where we can balance growth with the well-being of our people,” adds Shyam.

Bridging the Human & Tech Divide

The advent of AI and ML has undoubtedly transformed the HR landscape. These technologies have provided the tools to make more data-driven decisions, streamline operations, and reduce biases in hiring. CIGNEX has also embraced these technologies to enhance its HR practices. However, the company also understands that various challenges still exist. While AI is a powerful tool, it cannot replicate the intuition and empathy that human leaders bring to the table.

Along with the integration of AI and ML and the HR processes, the company strives to ensure that these technologies enhance the human touch that is critical in Talent Acquisition, Human resources, resource management, L&D and talent management. “I firmly believe that the key to success is finding harmony between technology and the people who use it,” adds Shyam.

Though the incorporation of AI and ML has been beneficial for the smoothened HR processes, Shyam also believes in Bill Gates’s famous quote. “We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten.” With this teaching in mind, Shyam also focuses on the fact that while AI is changing the industry at a rapid pace, companies must remain adaptable and open to continuous learning.

Conquering the Odds

According to Shyam, one of the most pressing challenges today is talent retention. In a world where employees have many options, holding on to top talent requires more than just attractive salaries. Improving this situation requires creating an environment where people feel valued, heard, and supported in their career development. This is particularly challenging in industries like IT, where skill shortages are prevalent, and competitive offers often lure employees.

Another challenge that Shyam finds difficult to handle is the increasing demand for flexible working arrangements. The pandemic forced many companies to adopt remote work, and now, employees are reluctant to return to traditional office environments. Finding the right balance between remote and in-office work is crucial to maintaining productivity, collaboration, and employee well-being.

CIGNEX addresses these challenges by focusing on employee experience. The company continuously invests in learning and development, ensuring its employees have the tools and resources they need to succeed. Additionally, it also nurtures a culture of open communication, where employees feel comfortable sharing their concerns and suggestions.

Integrating CSR into the Heart of CIGNEX

Sustainability, especially in the context of HR, is not just about environmental responsibility but also about creating long-term value for both employees and the organization. As we move forward, we must think about sustainability in all aspects of HR—employee development, retention, well-being, and corporate culture.

When asked about the CSR and sustainability initiatives, Shyam says, “I am confident that the future of HR will be a fusion of technology and human-centred practices. The rise of AI, the shift to remote work, and the growing importance of employee well-being are all part of a new era in HR. But through it all, the need for empathy, connection, and understanding remains paramount.

Shaping the Future and its Ways

As Peter Drucker once said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” This quote drives Shyam to be proactive in his approach, continually adapting new strategies to meet the evolving needs of the industry.

Talking about the vision for a great HR future, Shyam believes that leadership in HR is about being adaptable, fostering a culture of continuous learning, and always striving for excellence. As the HR world continues to evolve, being a passionate and adept HR leader, Shyam believes that by embracing change and focusing on the company’s core values, they can build a future where both individuals and organizations thrive.
