Higher Health: A Catalyst for Student Well-Being in South Africa
Dr. Ramneek describes Higher Health as a pivotal national agency under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in South Africa. Its mission focuses on enhancing the health, well-being, and psychosocial support of approximately 2.5 million students across 26 universities and 50 TVET colleges.
At Higher Health, he has developed an accredited online program, “Skills for Life and Soft Skills,” which equips students with essential workplace competencies while fostering resilience. This program covers ten crucial soft skills, including empathy, conflict resolution, digital literacy, and teamwork. By bridging the skills gap and complementing traditional education, he aims to improve employability and economic productivity among youth across the world.
Notably, the program is available in all major languages, including sign language, making it accessible to a diverse student population. Through these initiatives, he strives to build a healthier, more capable future generation in South Africa.
Empowering Youth Through the Skills for Life and Soft Skills Programme
Dr. Ramneek envisions a world where every young person is equipped with essential skills that transcend traditional academic and vocational training. As a key partner of UNESCO, Higher Health has emerged as Africa’s second-leading nonprofit organization focused on youth empowerment. The Skills for Life and Soft Skills online program is designed to make the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) accessible to young people, ensuring they can relate to these goals in their languages and contexts.
This innovative program targets basic literacy levels, bringing critical life skills to youth in a relatable manner. It emphasizes the importance of holistic development, addressing issues such as gender awareness, mental health, substance abuse prevention, and civic responsibility. By offering quality-assured certificates in various languages, with UNESCO-endorsed systems, he aims to enhance employability while fostering personal growth.
The curriculum includes ten vital soft skills necessary for today’s workforce, such as empathy, conflict resolution, digital literacy, and time management. These competencies not only improve job prospects but also build resilience among participants. The program integrates practical elements that encourage students to engage with their communities through peer education.
With a focus on adaptability and lifelong learning, Dr. Ramneek is committed to shaping future leaders who can navigate the complexities of modern society. Structure of the Skills for Life and Soft Skills Qualification
Dr. Ramneek outlines the Skills for Life and Soft Skills online qualification, which consists of eight comprehensive modules that address various challenges faced by youth today. These modules cover essential topics, including Civic Education, Gender Education, Mental Health, Disability, Sexuality Education, Substance Abuse and Resilience, Climate Change, and Financial Literacy.
Each module is credit-bearing, allowing students to earn certificates upon successful completion. These certificates can be added to their CVs and shared on professional networks like LinkedIn. This structured approach not only enhances employability but also fosters personal growth among participants, equipping them with vital life skills for a better future.
Impact on Student Wellness in South Africa
Dr. Ramneek identifies the integration of holistic health and psychosocial support services into the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) sector as one of Higher Health’s most significant achievements. Annually, the organization reaches over 2.5 million students across 26 universities, 50 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, and 9 Community Education and Training (CET) colleges in South Africa. The services provided include primary healthcare, mental health support, HIV testing, and interventions for gender-based violence.
A landmark partnership with UNESCO has further solidified Higher Health’s role as a leader in this field. Through initiatives like the Transforming MEN’talities campaign and the Skills for Life and Soft Skills program, he is making strides toward gender equality and comprehensive student support. This collaboration has garnered global attention, with over 88 ambassadors of UNESCO from various countries backing South Africa’s transformative efforts.
By addressing critical issues affecting youth, such as mental health and resilience, he is not only enhancing employability but also fostering a generation of informed, empowered individuals ready to contribute positively to society. He emphasizes that these initiatives represent a groundbreaking movement towards lasting change in student wellness and empowerment across the continent.
Addressing Gender-Based Violence
Dr. Ramneek identifies gender-based violence (GBV) as the most pressing challenge facing Higher Health today. With over 2.5 million youth in the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) sector, including more than 51% adolescent girls and young women, South Africa grapples with a severe GBV crisis. The statistics are alarming, revealing that South African women face a lifetime risk of 45.6% for gender-based violence and that 10% of reported rape cases occur within the higher education sector.
Over the past two years, more than 350,000 students have participated in the Higher Health Transforming MENtalities & Soft Skills curriculum. In the 2022-2023 period over 316,048 students engaged in Transforming MENtalities dialogues with over 219,316 young people voluntarily undergoing a Gender and Intimate Partner Violence risk assessments tool kit with Higher Health and with 18,994 young people identifying themselves at high risk for GBV. Over 12,682 young lives reported GBV and are linked to psychosocial counselling and where necessary legal and judicial support through this programme.
His efforts aim to prevent toxic relationships and save lives through early identification and support. Early intervention Saves lives!
