Is the free boiler scheme open for UK homeowners and tenants?

What is the free boiler scheme?

To reduce the United Kingdom energy consumption, the UK government has a Free Boiler Grant Scheme to provide grant boilers to homes across England, Wales, and Scotland.
The free boiler scheme was first initiated in April 2013, and was originally due to end in March 2015, but was extended by the UK government for 18 months when energy industries promised additional obligations under the ECO2 scheme.
ECO3 is the current free boiler scheme that offers eligible households, who would be likely to struggle to heat their homes, to get access to more energy efficient heating systems under the Affordable Warmth Obligation scheme.

Is the free boiler scheme available for homeowners?
If you are a homeowner and you require a new boiler, help could be available for you. All you need is one person permanently living in the household to be in receipt of at least one of a range of government benefits to potentially qualify under the government-backed ECO scheme.
The applicant for a boiler grant is not required to be an energy customer of one of the Big Six energy suppliers who provide the funding. The Big Six suppliers are: Scottish Power, British Gas, E.ON, EDF, SSE, and nPower.
Getting a new A-rated boiler will drastically reduce carbon emissions generated by heating your home. Savings on your fuel bills through the operation of a new energy efficient boiler could amount to as much as £300 a year. The boilers supplied will have an ‘A’ efficiency rating, meaning that hot water and heat will be generated at the property using less fuel than an old boiler, resulting in much lower energy bills.
What income related benefits do you need to receive to qualify?
As well as owning your own home, your boiler needs to be at least 7 years old and you or someone in your household should be receiving one or more of the government’s income-related benefits below for you to qualify for the free boiler scheme.

  • Universal credit
  • Working tax credits
  • Pension credits
  • Child tax credits
  • Income-related ESA
  • Income-related JSA
  • Veteran benefits

If you’re not currently receiving any benefits, there are other options for you to get a replacement boiler like “buy now pay later” and discounted rates. Contact us today for further information on what is available to you. Even if you are not able to get a free boiler through this scheme it could still be helpful to get a discount on your next boiler to save you money long term in the savings you make.
New insurance deal possibilities
When your new boiler is installed you should consider contacting your home insurance company to update your premium. Also, if you are planning to travel your new smart boiler can be controlled via an app, making it a much more convenient way to manage your bills and come home from your holiday to a warm house.
Why is the scheme free?
The UK government is obligated to make efforts to reduce carbon footprint and help in the fight against global warming. Old and inefficient boilers are a contributing factor to the amount of energy being lost as they take more time to heat your home. Therefore, your energy bill would be higher than if you had a new “greener” boiler. To help the situation the government has brought in a scheme that provides grants for new installations and more environmentally friendly boilers. Also, they are trying to help customers save hundreds of pounds on their annual heating bills by replacing their old boiler with a new and better performing one.
Is your boiler costing you more money to run than it should?
The boiler scheme was introduced in order to provide eligible occupants in the UK with affordable and efficient heating. Our research has found that boilers that are older than seven years in age operate at around 65% of their full capacity. This adds up to about 35p of every pound spent on heating is being wasted due to an inefficient boiler. By comparison, your new high-quality boiler is expected to run at no less than 90% efficiency, which means a loss of only 10p or less.
Can you qualify as a tenant for a free boiler grant?
Tenants in the United Kingdom who claimed any qualifying benefit were originally entitled to a free boiler grant under the Government’s old ECO Scheme. Unfortunately, funding is no longer available under the newer ECO3 scheme to landlords or private tenants.
