In 2023, Achille Staiano was appointed as Explora Journeys’ Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), signaling a new chapter for the luxury cruise brand. Staiano, who brings 30 years of industry experience to the role, has been tasked with leading the brand through its next phase of growth. His leadership is expected to be pivotal in steering Explora Journeys toward becoming a force in the luxury cruise sector.
Staiano’s appointment comes at a critical time for Explora Journeys. A subsidiary of MSC Cruises, the brand is currently preparing for expansion. With Staiano at the helm, the company is poised to enhance its offerings and further distinguish itself in the competitive luxury cruise market. Under his guidance, Explora Journeys aims to redefine luxury at sea, catering to discerning travelers seeking exclusivity, personalized service, and unparalleled experiences.
Setting a new standard in luxury cruising
Explora Journeys has quickly established itself as a trailblazer in the growing luxury cruise industry. In an interview with Travel Weekly, the cruise line’s Chief Sales Officer, Chris Austin, stated, “We certainly don’t want to be put in a competitive set with the classic, traditional cruise brands.” Instead, Explora I, which celebrated its first year at sea in August 2024, is designed to offer a home at sea experience. Despite being a mid-size ship, it boasts 461 oceanfront suites, penthouses, and residences that provide sweeping ocean views and private terraces.
What sets Explora’s luxury cruises apart from its competitors is its commitment to delivering an all-encompassing upscale experience. Guests can choose from 11 culinary experiences across six restaurants, each offering a diverse range of global cuisines. In-suite dining, the Chef’s Kitchen, and 12 bars and lounges (eight indoor and four outdoor) further enhance the onboard experience. The ship is also equipped with four swimming pools, extensive outdoor decks with 64 private cabanas, wellness facilities, and refined entertainment options, ensuring that every aspect of the journey is tailored to the needs of its guests.
Explora I’s itineraries are equally impressive, featuring carefully curated routes that take guests to some of the world’s most breathtaking destinations. As Staiano put it, “Designed to evoke the intimacy of a private yacht, Explora I has gracefully journeyed through the vibrant Mediterranean, the majestic Northern Europe, the invigorating coasts of North America and the enchanting shores of the Caribbean.”
Luxury as the growth engine for the cruise industry
According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the cruise industry is one of the fastest-growing segments of the tourism sector. In 2021, the industry contributed $75 billion (£59 billion) to the global economy, underscoring its significance in the broader travel market. As of 2024, the global ocean cruise industry is estimated to be worth $66.2 billion (£51.72 billion), representing a 13.8% increase over 2023.
While major players like the Royal Caribbean Group, which owns several renowned cruise lines, posted revenues of $15.8 billion (£12.34 billion), Explora Journeys and its parent company MSC Cruises have carved out a niche in the boutique luxury segment. Together, they generated approximately $4.8 billion (£3.75 billion) in revenues, highlighting the growing demand for more personalized and intimate cruise experiences.
Staiano’s strategic vision for the brand centers on capitalizing on this trend, positioning Explora Journeys as a leader in the luxury cruise market. With the upcoming launch of Explora II in late 2024 and plans to add four more luxury ships to the fleet by 2028, the brand is well on its way to expanding its footprint in this lucrative segment.
