The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recently announced that its chemical engineers have developed a new material that is as strong as steel but as light as plastic.
The new material can be easily manufactured on a larger scale. The material can be used for lightweight coatings for cars and smartphones. It can also be used to build strong blocks for holding bridges.
“We don’t usually consider plastic to be strong enough to support a building, but with this material you can enable new things. The newly discovered material has very unusual properties, and we are very excited about that, “said Michael Strano, the Carbon. P. Dubbs Professor of Chemical Engineering at MIT and the author of the new study.
The researchers created this material by developing a new process to form polymers. According to MIT statement, the material is several times stronger than bulletproof glass. It requires twice the amount of force to break compared to steel. It has only about one-sixth the density of steel.
