Karen Chung: The Driving Force and Innovation behind Special Learning

As the global autism prevalence rate continues to expand, just about 70 million parents of children with autism stand helpless. The sands of time take away their child’s ability to attain independence and higher quality of life. They lack the access to a life-altering Autism intervention called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates, in the U.S alone the Autism Prevalence Rate has increased to 1 in 59 children. Using a worldwide prevalence rate of 1 in 100, there are 70 million children, adolescents, and adults with autism in the world! In short, the world is currently undergoing a supply/demand gap, the likes of which haven’t been ever seen in recent times.
Besides, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) is no longer going to be certifying behavior analysts internationally. It is now more important than ever to reach out to international communities and families.

“Never underestimate the valuable and important difference you make in every life you touch. For the impact you make today has a powerful rippling effect on every tomorrow.” Anonymous

Taking this challenge to make a significant positive contribution to the world – Karen Chung is on a mission to impact the lives of every person affected by autism spectrum disorder and other special needs across the globe. Karen founded Special Learning, Inc., a company dedicated to becoming the global leader for autism, special needs, and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) solutions by leveraging technology as educational resources.

Dedicated to Become the Global Leader for Autism
Over the past few years, Special Learning, Inc. has diversified its offerings to expand its overall reach and impact. Initially, Special Learning, Inc. focused on training for behavior analysts and those who are working in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. Occupational Therapy programs have continued to grow at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences.  Under the Special Learning, Inc. umbrella, Karen recently launched ever-learning, which provides an intentional avenue for parents, educators and other professionals such as psychologists, occupational therapist, and speech and language pathologists to access professional and high level CEUs in their respective industries.
Lastly, ABA-BusinessGrowth.com specializes in providing the best talent management, business consulting, and training development for ABA agencies. The team realized that in order to create impact and change, it needed customizable training and education across disciplines.
Making a Way Through Challenges
Karen thinks the constant challenge that is ever-evolving is the technology itself. The need to keep up with the demands of technological advancements while remaining cognizant of maintaining out the ease of use for its customers is challenging. Special Learning, Inc strives to deliver a user-friendly experience so that technology does not impede anyone from being able to participate in the company’s training and education opportunities.
By leveraging the very best clinical subject matter experts, Special Learning creates real solutions to address acute problems in the field which have not been addressed by other individuals or organizations.
An Active Speaker
Karen believes that every tech entrepreneur has an opportunity to make a significant positive contribution to the world. The single vital attribute that a tech entrepreneur should possess is the intent to do good. Every tech company, whether a multinational or an individual app designer, has an opportunity to positively impact the world with its advancements. However, the motivation to do good must be a conscious and deliberate part of one’s professional journey.
Every Talent Counts
Karen mentions that the team at Special Learning has the same passion to make a global impact. The team works tirelessly to go above and beyond to help as many parents, educators, and professionals as it can. The company has been extremely fortunate that its dedicated tech team has been together since its inception nearly 12 years ago.
Expanding the Reach
Currently, Special Learning is working to expand its reach in helping parents of children on the autism waitlist. It created the Journey to Independence Parent Training to work as a stop-gap for families waiting to begin and/or resume ABA therapy. The organization is building out the recruitment services for ABA Business Growth so that it can help agencies find passionate, ethically-driven BCBAs and RBTs to expand and elevate the field of behavior analysis.
