Sustainable Solutions Preserving Environment & Resources!
Electronics often contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants. When improperly disposed of in landfills or incinerated, these substances can contaminate soil, air, and water, posing significant risks to the environment and biodiversity. Thus, E-Waste management is of paramount importance due to its critical implications for the environment, public health, resource conservation, and overall sustainability.
The IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) industry plays a critical role in managing the end-of-life cycle of IT equipment and electronics. It involves the secure and responsible disposal, refurbishment, recycling, or remarketing of used or obsolete IT assets.
SOGO Computers Pvt. Ltd., established in 1993 by CMD Mr. G Jayamuni Rao, is a trailblazer in IT product distribution, introducing renowned brands to southern India. Over the years, the company has diversified its services to include IT rental, infrastructure solutions, device refurbishing, and, crucially, electronic waste management.
We had the honor of catching up with the company and discussing its ideas, goals, working style, and future endeavors.
Here are the highlights from the interview:
Could you please brief about yourself and your motivation to embark on this sector?
The global rise in E-Waste has become a significant and worrisome trend, driven by increased electronic device consumption, rapid technological advancements, increased buying parity, and shorter product lifecycles.
Sogo, a pioneering company in the E-Waste industry, has developed and set up innovative and sustainable technologies on ITAD, ITAM, E-Waste Recycling, and Recovery & Refining of valuable metals into their purest form. We do take additional steps to reinvent, repurpose, and regenerate the products for resale and reuse prior to recycling.
Sogo finds its motivation to embark on this sector rooted in the need for responsible and sustainable management of electronic waste. The company recognizes the growing concern of e-waste generation and the associated environmental and health risks.
Sogo acknowledges that the rapid advancement of technology leads to a significant increase in electronic devices becoming obsolete or reaching the end of their lifecycle. Without proper disposal and recycling, these devices contribute to pollution and the depletion of valuable resources. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Sogo has dedicated itself to providing comprehensive ITAD (IT Asset Disposition) and e-waste recycling services.
Sogo understands that ITAD plays a crucial role in the lifecycle management of electronic assets. By securely and responsibly handling the disposition of IT equipment, Sogo ensures data security, compliance with regulations, and the maximization of asset value.
We prioritize the refurbishment and reuse of viable devices to extend their lifespan and reduce electronic waste.
Furthermore, Sogo emphasizes the importance of e-waste recycling to prevent the hazards associated with improper disposal. They utilize advanced recycling techniques to extract valuable materials from discarded electronics, reducing the reliance on mining for raw materials and minimizing the environmental impact.
Sogo’s commitment extends beyond its services, and our motto is Zero Waste Zero Emission. Sogo actively engages in creating awareness about the importance of sustainable e-waste management among businesses, communities, and other stakeholders. We collaborate with local organizations, participate in environmental initiatives, and support regulatory efforts to promote responsible e-waste practices.

How does your company ensure data security during the IT asset disposal process?
Data security is a significant concern for numerous organizations, including banks and individuals. The potential manipulation of data in the wrong hands poses a major risk. At Sogo, we go to great lengths to control and ensure data security during the IT asset disposal process.
Sogo utilizes unique methods, distinct from the regular practices, to safeguard client data. The process involves four stages of destruction, customized by Sogo with a combination of electronic, magnetic, and mechanical techniques.
Electronic Erasure
For electronic destruction, we employ specialized and highly reliable software to electronically erase data. This entails overwriting the entire storage media with random data patterns, rendering the original data unrecoverable.
Magnetic Destruction
Magnetic destruction involves the use of degaussing, a method that employs a powerful magnetic field to permanently erase data. This process ensures the data is irretrievable, rendering the storage device unusable and necessitating recycling rather than reuse.
Mechanical Destruction
In cases where data erasure is not possible or desired, the final stage is mechanical destruction. This method involves the destruction of the storage media in two stages, reducing it to tiny pieces and rendering the data irrecoverable by any means.
Surveillance & Security
To enhance security, our data destruction unit is equipped with comprehensive measures. The unit is fully covered, entry is restricted with biometric controls to prevent unauthorized access, and surveillance cameras continuously monitor the area. The doors of the data destruction room remain closed, and additional 24/7 security measures are in place to secure the storage area.
Accountability & Transparency
To maintain accountability and transparency, a strict chain of custody is established throughout the disposal process. This ensures control over IT assets, with documented procedures for tracking, handling, and storage. Access to the assets is limited to authorized personnel only.
At Sogo, we prioritize data security and take every precaution to ensure the complete destruction of data during the IT asset disposal process.
Can you provide examples of any certifications or industry standards that your company adheres to in its ITAD practices?
Compliance with industry standards not only demonstrates good security practices but also enhances client relationships and provides a competitive advantage.
Sogo has obtained certification from reputable bodies for adherence to international standards. We hold the R2v3 certification provided by SERI, USA, which ensures the implementation of stringent data security measures, controls, and best practices.
The equipment used for data erasure complies with the standards set by NSA, USA, and DoD.
Additionally, we have achieved certification for other international standards such as ISO 9001: QMS (Quality Management System), ISO 14001: EMS (Environmental Management System), and ISO 45001: OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Management System).
To further demonstrate our commitment to environmental responsibility, our facility has authorized thorough audits by both the State Pollution Board (KSPCB) and the Central Pollution Board (CPCB). These audits were conducted by regional and federal officers to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
By maintaining these certifications and authorizations, Sogo showcases its dedication to meeting high security and environmental standards, fostering trust with clients, and gaining a competitive edge in the industry.
How does your company handle the physical disposal of IT assets, such as computers, servers, and mobile devices?
Our PAN India logistics team collects the IT assets, which are then introduced into our ERP system for identification. Once identified, the materials are sorted based on their functionality. Functional products undergo refurbishment in our dedicated section for re-marketing.
Non-functional items are sent to the component reusing section to extract value from working components before being dismantled.
After dismantling, the products are divided into valuable and non-valuable fractions. The valuable fractions are sent to our recycling unit, which employs a combination of mechanical, pyro metallurgy, and hydrometallurgy processes to recover and refine all valuable materials, including plastics, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as precious and platinum group metals.
Our system operates as a closed loop and is equipped with necessary pollution control equipment to ensure environmentally sound processing.
