“Assessment factory” will increase capacity and throughput by over 300%
Philadelphia, PA / Woodcliff Lake, NJ (February 2016)—BPM-D and the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials, Inc. (RIFM) announced today that they have successfully concluded the first phase of their collaboration to increase the performance of RIFM’s Safety Assessment Process. As a result, the potential resource capacity and overall throughput of RIFM’s end-to-end process increased by over 300% through various process improvements and the elimination of resource constraints. These improvements allow RIFM to increase their process efficiencies, lower costs, and streamline inter-enterprise processes with their member companies.
The BPM-D Framework with its rapid process improvement approach was applied to create the transparency necessary to identify relevant process issues and constraints, define necessary process improvements, and develop a roadmap for transforming RIFM’s Safety Assessment Process. In a collaborative effort between RIFM staff and BPM-D consultants, the concept of an “Assessment Factory” was developed to outline RIFM’s vision for how Safety Assessments will be developed in the future, maximizing value for RIFM’s member companies and stakeholders. This vision is realized through the implementation of appropriate work packages. The ongoing implementation includes the introduction of new performance metrics, a process owner to manage and drive value across functional areas, and multiple other operational process improvements.
“I’m very satisfied with the progress of this performance improvement initiative. The new level of transparency in the Safety Assessment Process helps RIFM process data faster and make well-informed decisions on the safe use of fragrance materials,” explained Dr. Jim Romine, President of RIFM. Added Dr. Mathias Kirchmer, Managing Director of BPM-D, “We are excited about the productive collaboration with RIFM. I’m especially glad about the value we created together through using the proven BPM-D Framework for Strategy Execution. We are looking forward to the next steps of the performance journey with RIFM.”

About RIFM
Founded in 1966, RIFM is the international scientific authority for the safe use of fragrance materials. RIFM generates, evaluates and distributes scientific data on the safety assessment of fragrance raw materials found in personal and household care products. Through extensive research, testing and constant monitoring of all scientific literature available, RIFM maintains its Database as the most comprehensive source worldwide of physical-chemical, toxicological and eco-toxicological data associated with known fragrance and flavor materials. RIFM’s scientific findings are evaluated by an independent Expert Panel—an international group of dermatologists, pathologists, toxicologists, reproduction, respiratory and environmental scientists. The Expert Panel evaluates the safety of fragrance ingredients under conditions of intended use and publishes its results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The decisions of the Expert Panel regarding restrictions of use are published as IFRA Standards. For more information about RIFM.
