On the seabed of the NOAA Atlantic Ocean, scientists have found a number of puzzling holes. They have sought internet users for their views on how these holes could have formed.
While exploring the summit of an underwater volcano north of the Azores – close to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge – scientists examined the ocean floor at a depth of roughly 3 km.
During the Voyage to the Ridge 2022 mission, which involves investigating and charting poorly known deepwater regions, the discovery was made.
According to the NOAA, researchers are unable to definitively identify the origin or method of construction of the holes.
However, scientists have proposed that the holes could represent digging and removal by an organism living in the sediment or, possibly, by a feeding appendage of huge animals on the silt top.
The Federal organization said, “The ultimate origin of the holes still remains a mystery.”
