Google is increasingly focused on India as a key growth market, particularly in the premium smartphone segment, according to Nanda Ramachandran, Vice President of Mobile Business at Google. Speaking at the Made by Google event, Ramachandran highlighted India’s robust market potential, noting that the premium segment is expected to surpass many of Google’s other major markets.
“India is a fantastic growing market, and we believe the premium smartphone market here will exceed many of our top markets globally. We aim to be a significant player in this space,” Ramachandran stated. He emphasized that Google’s success in India hinges on tailoring its product portfolio to meet local consumer demands.
Google’s commitment to India is underscored by the recent announcement of Made-in-India Pixel 8 smartphones. The company is excited about its partnership with the Indian government and its plans to enhance the Pixel experience for Indian consumers. Maggie Wei, Senior Director of Product Operations at Google, mentioned that while the initial focus is on local production, the company is exploring the potential for exporting devices manufactured in India.
Google has established manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, which Wei described as “exciting locations.” Alongside the Pixel 8, Google also introduced the Pixel 9 series, marking its entry into the foldable smartphone market, as well as unveiling the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2.
To boost accessibility, Google has expanded its retail presence in India, with Pixel products now available in over 150 Croma and Reliance Retail stores across 15 cities. Additionally, Google announced the opening of three walk-in centers in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, in partnership with Flipkart’s service arm, F1 Info Solutions and Services Private Limited. The company also reduced prices for earlier Pixel smartphone models.
