Maritime Launch pursues a new type after dumping Ukrainian-made rockets.
A new agreement between Canada and the United States has rekindled the potential of a spaceport in rural Nova Scotia.
Sean Fraser, a federal cabinet minister and Nova Scotia MP, revealed in Halifax on Friday that the two countries had concluded a Technology Safeguards Agreement. This agreement allows Canada to use U.S. space launch technology, knowledge, and data.
The agreement does not go into effect until both countries independently review and approve it, and Fraser could not specify a timetable for that. However, he expects each country to proceed promptly with their respective internal clearances.
Steve Matier, the president and CEO of Maritime Launch Services, stated that he is not waiting for the ink to dry. “We are good to go,” he told reporters after the news. He called the two-country agreement as a “massive” step for his firm.
“It is truly key for us going forward here, and it’s something that we’ve been working on behind the scenes and hoping to get completed,” he said. Matier has been seeking a spaceport in the remote coastal village of Canso, N.S., for several years.
Maritime Launch has a 40-year lease on approximately 135 hectares of provincial Crown land, where it plans to erect its launch pad. The company received approval to build from the provincial government in 2022. However, so far, only roads have been developed inside the site.
