According to a person familiar with the subject, Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, is in talks to acquire cybersecurity firm Wiz. The sale might be worth up to $23 billion, according to the individual, who did not want to be identified because he was talking nonpublic information. That would be the internet giant’s greatest acquisition to date.
An agreement has not been reached, and the talks may still end without one, according to the individual. A spokesman from Alphabet did not immediately reply to calls for comment. A spokeswoman for Wiz declined to comment. The talks follow Alphabet’s decision to withdraw its bid for customer relationship management provider HubSpot Inc..
A possible acquisition of the size of Wiz, as with the HubSpot deal, is unusual for a huge digital business like Alphabet, given the increased scrutiny that the company faces from antitrust regulators. Google is already facing multiple antitrust issues, including a case by the US Justice Department accusing it of exploiting its dominant position in internet search and another involving its digital advertising tools.
Alphabet has increased its investment in the cloud customer business, adding more generative artificial intelligence tools for clients.Though Google still lags behind Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. in the cloud computing market, the company stated that its cloud segment has been profitable in successive quarters, following years of losses.
Google‘s acquisition of Wiz, a cloud and cybersecurity business, might help it catch up with Microsoft and Amazon in the increasingly competitive cloud industry.
