In a letter to the United States Congress members, the current Chief Executive Officer, Arvind Krishna, said the International Business Machines Corp will no longer have general facial recognition or analysis software.
The organization will stop supplying facial recognition applications and will condemn the use of such technologies for mass surveillance and racial discrimination purposes.
The decision of the technology giant to get out of the facial recognition business comes as the US protests about the death of George Floyd, a black man who was in custody by police in Minneapolis.
Country-wide government leaders have introduced legislation to tackle police brutality and racial injustice and improve the oversight of police departments.
In the letter to US Senators, Krishna advocated for more oversight and accountability for law enforcement.
