Elon Musk Eliminates the New ‘Official’ Label for Famous Twitter Users

Elon Musk, the new twitter owner, said that he already “killed” the new “official” label that had begun rolling out for some of the platform’s biggest names earlier in his latest series of modifications to Twitter’s authentication system.

“Please note that Twitter will do lots of dumb things in the coming months. We will keep what works & change what doesn’t,” Elon Musk wrote in a tweet.

However, Twitter product executive Esther Crawford stated that the “official” label will continue to be distributed as part of the Twitter Blue launch but will initially only apply to government and commercial organizations.

Elon Musk, now CEO of Twitter and sole director has criticized the company’s original verification system, which awards a blue check mark, or verification, to prominent users.

Blue checks were originally used to authenticate the identities of government officials, lawmakers, celebrities, journalists, CEOs, medical experts, and organizations whose identities had been validated by the company.
